In July of 2023, Emily Strand and Eric T. Styles attended and presented a breakout for the 13th National Black Catholic Congress, held at the National Harbor outside Washington D.C. with 3,000 in attendance. Their breakout was titled “Pastoral Lessons from Fr. Clarence Rivers.”

In July 2023, Star Wars: Essays Exploring a Galaxy Far, Far Away was published by Vernon Press. This companion book to Star Trek: Essays Exploring the Final Frontier spans the beloved Star Wars galaxy from a variety of critical viewpoints, and was co-edited by Amy H. Sturgis. In April 2023, Star Trek: Essays Exploring the Final Frontier was published by Vernon Press. This scholarly anthology treating all eras of the beloved science fiction franchise was co-edited by Amy H. Sturgis and Emily Strand and is the first of three scholarly volumes co-edited by Emily set to release in 2023. The book can be purchased at the publisher’s website here.

In January of 2023, Emily was interviewed once again by Michael Boyce for his excellent podcast Geek4. This time, Michael and Emily spoke about her love of Star Wars and involvement in Star Wars costuming communities. Listen to the engaging interview here.

In August of 2022, Emily spoke at Columbus, Ohio’s Center for Science and Industry (COSI)’s COSI After Dark: Hive of Scum and Villainy event on Star Wars, giving a humorous academic presentation entitled “Midi-chlorians: From a Certain Point of View.” The event was an adults-only celebration for fans of both the museum and of Star Wars.

In July of 2022, Emily’s chapter “Said Hermione Earnestly: Harry Potter’s Prose and Why It Doesn’t Matter,” was published in the scholarly volume Open at the Close: Literary Essays on Harry Potter by the University Press of Mississippi. The book can be purchased from the publisher’s website here.

In July 2021, Emily presented an On Demand Breakout for the National Pastoral Musician’s 2021 convention entitled, “Get Literary With It: Discerning Strong Liturgical Texts”.

Then, in another recent episode of Geek4, Emily, Michael and Dr. Brenton Dickieson talk about the beautiful and awful (in the classic sense) novel The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell in this new episode of Geek4. Thanks to host Dr. Michael Boyce for initiating these great conversations.

In January of 2021, Emily was appointed to the National Council for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians as Forum for the Chair on Communications.

January of 2021 saw the release of The Science Fiction Makers, a documentary film by Canadian filmmaker Andrew Wall. Emily is featured as one of several scholars who discuss the subgenre of Christian Science Fiction, especially the works of Victor Rousseau, CS Lewis and Madeleine L’Engle. The Science Fiction Makers airs on Canada’s SuperChannel and is also available for streaming rental or purchase (follow the link above for more info).

In October of 2020, Emily became co-host of Potterversity: A Potter Studies Podcast (formerly Reading, Writing, Rowling).

Emily’s Breakout for the 2020 National Pastoral Musicians Association, “Choosing Liturgical Music with Theological Savvy,” was named one of the top ten breakout talks of the entire virtual convention.
